HONG KONG, October 3, 2000 -- Pacific Century CyberWorks' data center operation Powerbase has achieved the distinction of being the first in the Asia-Pacific region to receive the Sun Microsystems' SunTone[SM] Certification for delivery of high-standard service quality. Sun instituted the SunTone Certification and Branding Program to provide customers of web-based services and applications with a means for identifying suppliers who meet defined high standards for providing quality service over the Internet. "The SunTone Certification demonstrates our leading data center capabilities," said Joseph Ma, President of Data Center Services & Web Hosting at Pacific Century CyberWorks. "It also means that Powerbase has proven high standards and architecture designed to provide our customers with superior performance, reliability and outstanding service level." The SunTone certified status also marks a major milestone in Powerbase's strategic initiatives towards continuous service enhancement and dynamic regional expansion. To meet an ever-increasing volume of data traffic generated by cross-border Internet activities, Powerbase plans to upgrade existing Internet connectivity with OC3 (Optical Carrier Level 3 at 155 Mbps) connection internationally, and an enhanced Hong Kong exchange network speed. To become an even greater enabler of local and Asian e-Business, Powerbase plans to extend its services, now available in Shanghai, Taiwan, Singapore and Seoul, to other major Asian and mainland cities. Powerbase local and regional facilities are scheduled to expand to about 1 million sq. ft by 2002. About the SunTone[SM] Certification and Branding Program Launched in May 1999, the SunTone Certification and Branding Program is an effort led by Sun Microsystems designed to make 7-by-24 service and reliability the norm for consumer and business Internet-based services. Under the SunTone Certification and Branding Program, service providers and application service providers have completed a rigorous specification process which examines the infrastructure, operational practices, hardware, software, and overall service delivery to determine that the services or applications they provide meet the program's high standards. SunTone certification is designed to give customers the confidence that key aspects of the SP's operations and infrastructure have been evaluated and judged to be certified to meet the SunTone programs' high standards of quality. The SunTone Certification and Branding Program currently has more than 400 member service providers, independent software vendors, and network equipment providers working with Sun.
