Hong Kong February 26, 2002 -- An international consortium led by PCCW's Business e-Solutions Ltd., a subsidiary of Pacific Century CyberWorks, (PCCW) (SEHK: 0008, ADR-NYSE: PCW), has won an IT contract from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government worth approximately US$21 million (HK$162,689,356), the company announced today.
This contract is for the provision of hardware, software and related services for the implementation of Hong Kong's future Smart Identity Card System (SMARTICS) by the Hong Kong SAR Government.
Under the terms of the contract, the consortium directed by PCCW's eSolutions Business unit will provide 1.2 million computer-encrypted smart cards to Hong Kong SAR Government's Immigration Department.
PCCW Commercial Group Managing Director Aloysius Lee said the integrated telecommunication company's ability to assemble and efficiently manage a diverse group of technologically sophisticated companies was an important factor in PCCW winning the contract.
"PCCW was chosen for this contract because we and our partners demonstrated the ability to create a high quality and efficient smart-card solution for Hong Kong," said Mr. Lee. "Winning this contract clearly communicates that PCCW meets the high expectations of large-scale customers."
Because of the complexity of SMARTICS, and stringent requirements on data privacy and data security, a very high emphasis was placed on the ability of PCCW to demonstrate to the Government that the consortium's quality of work would be of the highest degree.
PCCW identified and assembled top-quality technology partners from around the world, bringing together international and local companies that collectively provide security and related technology systems for tens of millions of security and credit cards as well as services to governments and large corporations.
Among the key partners are: ACI Worldwide and Cogent Systems from the US, KEYCORP from Australia, SecureNet Asia from Hong Kong, Mondex International from the UK and Trüb AG from Switzerland.
Mr. Lee said PCCW's SMARTICS contract demonstrates an emerging skill set that the company is focused on further developing. "With the help of our experienced, premium-quality partners, we are building an expertise in an area where we foresee strong future growth and business potential. More and more countries are adopting or considering adopting such smart-card technology."
Mr. Lee said he was confident that with PCCW and the Government working closely together, the contract would be fulfilled in a timely manner and to the high standards called for by the Hong Kong SAR Immigration Department.
